[BRIEF]
In the Graduate Design Studio, we examined the role of narrative in design. Beyond narrative, there were no restrictions within the scope of the course. The process began with an examination of narrative and its examples in design. It culminated in the production of a project at the end of the term.
[STORY]
The conceptual framework of our project, which was designed with the non-human in mind, addressed AI, the most trending topic of our day, in a conceptual way. Our sources of inspiration were also very important. We drew inspiration from various sources across different mediums, such as Love, Death & Robots, Philip K. Dick's dystopian novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, and the film Blade Runner. We began the development process by creating the project's conceptual story.
[DESIGN STRATEGY]
We observe three robots with different characteristics who gained consciousness due to software errors as they attempt to understand the world. The robots' efforts to discover the world intersect with the concept of the third place in architecture and urban planning design. First and second places (home and work) are easily comprehensible and meaningful spaces for robots. However, they struggle to understand fluid spaces in Third Place, where unexpected encounters occur, because they encounter no excitement or different emotions in these areas. We shaped the design around information gathered from emotional maps that visualized their interactions and classified their characteristics.
Using Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality technologies, we presented the design by modeling the space at the symposium where we presented our project featuring the three robots. We placed the drawings in 360° to allow everyone at the exhibition to experience the robots' communication.
